Principles of Wilderness Survival

things you can eat in the wild to survive

You will likely find yourself in an emergency situation, whether you are bushwalking or camping. There are basic principles to wilderness survival that will help ensure your survival.

First, remain calm and positive. This is a big step in the right direction for survival.

The Fundamental Principles

It doesn't matter if your experience is a seasoned one or if you just enjoy hiking and camping. You need to be familiar with basic principles of wilderness survival. These simple steps will save your life during an emergency.

Being positive and optimistic are two key ingredients to staying alive. A fearless mindset and refusal to give up also improve your odds of survival.

Shelter

Shelter is an essential part of human survival. It can be built out of leaves, branches, and other natural materials, or it can be a man-made structure like a cave or a cabin.

When you are in an emergency situation you must seek shelter. Shelter can come from many places such as trees, caves or abandoned buildings. You even have the option to find shelter at subway stations.

Water

survival questions to ask

Water is an essential ingredient of life on Earth. It is present in all three phases (solid, liquid, gas) and ties together the major components of our environment -- air, clouds, lakes, oceans, vegetation, and snowpack.

Water is also an important solvent. This allows for the dissolution of many different substances. It helps cells transport and use oxygen as well as other nutrients.

Food

Food is a vital part of survival. To ensure its safety, food should be kept in an airtight container for long periods. It is important to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it requires for good health.

You can keep a variety of food items in your home to ensure you are able to survive an emergency. These include cookies, snacks, candies, breads, bars of chocolate, canned food, fresh meats, grains, and dehydrated as well as freeze dried foods.

Compass

It doesn't matter if you are in the woods, or on a boat; knowing how to use both a compass (and a map) is essential for survival. A map displays the location of landmarks and a map uses Earth's magnetic field to guide you.

The compass points north because the needle aligns with the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field. However, it does not point to the geographical North Pole (also called the true North) as the Earth's magnet field is not a straight line.

Fire

A chemical reaction that releases heat, light and heat from a combustible object with oxygen is known as "fire". These flames can be used to heat water, cook and lighten the room.

what you need to survive

While fire can be a hazardous and complicated chemical process, its role is important in nature. Fires create habitat patches that allow animals and plants to thrive.

First aid

Basic knowledge of first aid can make the difference in saving a life or dying for someone who has been injured or is suffering from an illness. It can help keep a person alive until paramedics arrive or they are taken to the hospital.

To help someone, it is important to stay calm and evaluate the situation. After stabilization, the first helper must immediately administer first aid.

Fear

How well someone can deal with fear is critical to their survival. You are more valuable to your brain than your body in emergency situations.

Our sympathetic nervous, which is a part of the autonomic nervous and part of our brain, activates a biochemical process that prepares for fight or flight. This process causes the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.
